Having a positive mentality is widely misunderstood and, for many people, the right mentality has no bearing on gym life, weight loss, and nutrition.
Why is having the right mental state so important, if not integral, in working out?
I talk a lot about having the right mentality when you have a goal of being in the gym and getting fit – but why do I consistently preach about having a good mental state? Harvard ran a study that focused on how the thoughts we have affect our brain. They took two groups of people; all participants were of the same intellect that had never played piano prior to the study. All participants had been scanned prior to measure their brains before any activity. One group actually played scales on a piano every day for a certain period of time. The second group was told to simply think about playing the scales, but never actually physically touched a piano. After the study, the brains of both groups of participants were scanned again to measure any structural changes to the brain as a result of the piano playing (both imaginary & real). The results? BOTH groups of participants showed that the part of the brain that corresponds with the finger movements from piano playing had considerably grown. So, those that only thought about the finger movements still considerably changed the chemistry of their brain.
The same goes for us in other areas of our lives. We all have the opportunity to reformat our lives just by changing our mindset. What we think about is what we attract and eventually become; it’s a simple law of attraction! Newton’s law of universal gravitation states that a particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force which is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers. To put it simply in non-technical terms, the Law of Attraction is the ability to attract into our lives the matter upon which we are focusing. Craving chocolate? Thinking about it only makes that desire stronger. Reformat your individual thoughts and in the long run you reformat your entire mindset one itty bit at a time.
So how does this relate to the gym and our nutrition? The problem most of us encounter is that we set goals, and forget to do the preparation work or get so exasperated trying to make the encounter “come true” that we give up. We forget to spend some time imagining the goal coming to fruition and CHANGING OUR MINDSET so that the hard work we put in to it actually pays off. If you struggle getting to the gym, imagine yourself there before actually going! Instead of beating yourself up for every time you felt out of place exercising, think about yourself conquering the perfect squat or deadlift.
There are ways to change that mindset so that you can conquer all that life has to offer and I have tools to help! The battle truly is either won or lost in the mind; schedule a consult now to learn how to master your mind – both in and outside of the gym! I am on YOUR side and together we can get a gym program and nutrition plan working so your goals become reality.
